Abbott Vishing Hack: ShinyHunters Leak 10.9M Emails [2026]
Abbott Laboratories is the latest household-name healthcare company to learn that a single phone call can undo years of security investment. On August 7, 2026, The Register reported that the extortion group ShinyHunters had dumped data stolen from Abbott’s Cancer Diagnostics business, after the company apparently declined to pay a ransom. The leak, according to the outlet, contains 10.9 million unique email addresses along with personal and health information tied to Abbott’s cancer diagnostics operations, which include the Exact Sciences business Abbott acquired earlier in 2026.
The intrusion did not start with malware, a zero-day, or a phishing email. Abbott’s own statement on the incident, published July 16, 2026, says the breach traces back to a vishing attack, plain voice phishing, and explicitly notes “this was a vishing attack; not an encryption malware event.” That single sentence captures where enterprise security has drifted in 2026: attackers increasingly skip the network perimeter altogether and go straight for the person answering the phone at the help desk.

Key Points that Matter
- ShinyHunters continues to demonstrate how vishing can enable major enterprise breaches, using social engineering to turn trusted employees into an initial access pathway.
- Identity and access controls can still be undermined by voice-based deception, allowing attackers to manipulate users and potentially gain access to sensitive systems and data.
- Organizations need controls before the human interaction occurs. Voice Security can help disrupt malicious calls before attackers reach employees and put their social engineering playbook into action.
You Can Stop Voice-Based Threats
The Voice Channel has become the most exploited pathway for threat actors. Voice Security is no longer a nice to have, but a critical mandate.
Mutare’s Voice Security Platform defends the voice channel as critical infrastructure. Operating as a technical control at the network edge, it stops vishing, social engineering, spoofed calls, spam storms, and GenAI-powered attacks.
We understand that every organization is at a different stage of its Voice Security journey.
Some are just beginning to understand the risks. Others are evaluating solutions or validating technologies. Take a moment to check out Test Drive to choose your path towards understanding the voice security landscape and learning about a comprehensive defense solution.
